Our Impact

Everything we do is environmentally restorative, socially just and economically inclusive. Seaweed has a positive effect on many challenges we face today.

CO2e Mitigation

97 ton CO2e

Every ton of seaweed has absorbed 120 kg CO2, 2 kg of nitrogen and 0.2 kg of phosphorus.

Community Development

61 families

Seaweed cultivation creates new economic activity in coastal communities.

Ocean Regeneration

20 hectares

Seaweed reduces ocean acidification and promotes marine biodiversity.

No promises just tangible impact.

We are an impact company. Our three Impact Metrics above give a sense of the measurable impact that we are already making today. And we’re growing it every day. Impact in engrained in our company's DNA in everyday decision and choices.

Impact strategy
& framework

Our impact approach is built on the GIIN IRIS+ principles, the generally accepted system for measuring, managing, and optimizing impact. Running farms in Ireland, Morocco, India and The Netherlands our seaweed contributes to the restoration of coastal and ocean zones. Its growth only requires sunlight and naturally occurring marine nutrients. The biomass actively removes excess nutrients from eutrophic areas, and mitigates ocean acidification. While growing, seaweed also forms a habitat for marine life and enriches marine biodiversity.

  • 14.1 Reduction of marine pollution through seaweed farming (acting as natural C, N, P sink)
  • 14.2 Build sustainable, regenerative seaweed farms that encourage biodiversity
  • 14.3 Reduction of ocean acidification through seaweed farming (acting as natural C, N, P sink)

Climate

Seaweed is regenerative by nature. Our operation has several areas where carbon capturing comes in place.

To start with, seaweed, like land plants, uses photosynthesis to turn carbon dioxide (CO2) into seaweed biomass.

The amount of carbon dioxide sequestered during growth can be easily measured and ranges between 11-14% of wet weight. Then our bio stimulant increases Soil Organic Carbon content, our TopHealth Dairy reduces methane emissions and all TSC animal blends improve Feed Conversion Rate.

  • 1,000kg of seaweed absorbs 120kg of CO2, 2kg of N, and 0.2kg of P
  • TopHealth Plants increases Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) content by up to 15 to 25% over 3 years
  • TopHealth Dairy reduces methane emissions with cows at 30+% (1 cow on our product reduces 1 ton of CO2e per year)
  • A 10% FCR improvement with 100,000 pigs in NL (0.8% of total) results in 18,150 tons CO2e reduction per year

Employment

We set up operating entities where we work with local coastal communities for the operations at sea. We employ or work directly with local coastal families in the seaweed value chain.

  • In India we provide fishermen with a health insurance and a loan that they can use to build a seaweed farm
  • In Morocco we work with a Cooperative that aims to put fishermen and women to work

Agriculture

With our Blue Farming® approach, we support farmers in their transition to sustainable and organic farming. Our TopHealth seaweed-based products have the ability to contribute to many valuable elements for the farmer: 1) better health & wellbeing of animals, soils and plants, 2) higher quality and better performance of animals, soils and plants, 3) less use of harmful inputs, 4) positive climate contribution and 5) economic benefits for the farmers.

  • Our TopHealth Poultry product when co-fed to broilers improves food conversion rate, reduces the needs for antibiotics, and reduces stress. These results have been confirmed by a recent field trial amongst 34,000 boilers in The Netherlands.
  • Our organic bio stimulant TopHealth Plants improves the quality of the soil, holds more water and enriches the soil with natural nutrients and organic matter. It increases Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) content by up to 15 to 25% over 3 years. For crops, it creates more roots, increases resistance to abiotic stresses (heat, draught, frost, salt, flooding) and biotic stresses (diseases, herbivores) and therefore reduces the need for chemical fertilizers and pesticides. We are validating our results through field trials with a variety of farmers with e.g. crops, pastures, horticulture.
  • TopHealth Dairy reduces methane emissions with cows at 30+% (1 cow on our product reduces 1 ton of CO2e per year)
  • All animal blends result in an improved Feed Conversion Rate. A 10% FCR improvement with 100,000 pigs results in 18,000 tons CO2e reduction per year
